Dominance. A word usually found in describing the traits of a man. But in the world of sports, we see women take that trait - breathe it, eat it, live it, become it - and when this happens it is one of the most amazing things ever. Tennis superstar, Serena Williams, is dominance.

At twenty-two years of age, she is the most dominant female athlete of my time. Not even a month into the new year and she is already showing us that she is still 'that girl'. At thirty-five years old, Serena has clinched the number one spot and she has broken her tie for the Women's Singles Open-era with Steffi Graf with her 6-4, 6-4 win against her sister, Venus Williams, last week at the Australian Open. That is Grand Slam singles title number twenty-three for her.

Her older sister, being one of her greatest competitors in the game of tennis, acknowledges Serena's dominance and she has seen first hand, her sister's great power and skill, and has never backed down from a match against her. Serena and Venus have faced each other in finals matches numerous times but Serena has come out on top about 80 per cent of the time.

But one thing that is most admired about these sisters is that through ups and downs, triumphs and defeat, health and injury, they always have each others' backs. They are each others' biggest supporter. Serena talks about her sister in the NY Times article, "Serena Williams Beats Venus Williams to Win Her 7th Australian Open Title" and says this: "There’s no way I would be at 23 without her; there’s no way I would be at 1 without her...There’s no way I would have anything without her. She’s my inspiration. She’s the only reason I’m standing here today, and the only reason that the Williams sisters exist. So thank you, Venus, for inspiring me to be the best player I could be and inspiring me to work hard. Every time you won this week, I felt like I’ve got to win, too.”

Every great superhero has a great sidekick - the Robin to my Batman, the Bucky Barnes to my Captain America, the Jimmy Olsen to my Superman, even the Shaq to my Kobe (I had to do it). As Serena and Venus continue to climb the tennis achievement ladder for how ever many more years that they've got, they will always be in it together. And for young athletic girls who have a sister playing along with them or a best friend, they can always say, "You are the Serena to my Venus" and vice versa.

Congratulations to Serena Williams on another title down.
